Coloradoan earns First Amendment service award

Reporters, photographers win statewide honors

The Fort Collins Coloradoan's effort to fight for transparency at Colorado State University was honored Friday with one of the Colorado Press Association's highest honors.

The paper also won several honors Friday night at the annual Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters awards banquet.

The Coloradoan and Pueblo Chieftain's First Amendment-related work in challenging CSU was recognized with CPA's Service to the First Award. The Steamboat Pilot also received the award for its lawsuit that successfully challenged an illegal closed meeting by the local school board.

The Coloradoan, Chieftain and the Colorado Independent sued the Colorado State University Board of Governors in May 2009, alleging the board violated the state's open meetings law in its selection of board Vice Chairman Joe Blake as the university's new chancellor.
