Buescher looking to state court ruling on campaign finance limits

Secretary of State Bernie Buescher said the recent 5-4 federal court ruling that federal limits on corporate campaign spending violated First Amendment rights of free speech make it highly likely that state limits are likely to be swept aside as well. As a result, Buescher, Gov. Bill Ritter and the Legislature asked the state Supreme Court to give lawmakers guidance on whether state restrictions are still constitutional.
In an interview with The Chieftain editorial board, Buescher said he expects the state court to render a decision as early as April. Specifically, state officials want to know whether corporations and labor unions can make unlimited contributions to candidates or to advertising or election campaigns on their behalf.
