“The fact that they only gave money when he was doing these final rules, that more than ever really raises flags. There’s something fishy going on.”
Rep. Mark Ferrandino, commenting on campaign contributions from payday lending companies to Attorney General John Suthers as Suthers writes regulations to implement a new payday lending law, as reported in the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, August 13, 2010

Ethics Watch Calls On HD56 Candidate Ali Hasan To Immediately Return Unlawful Contribution

September 30, 2008
According to campaign finance disclosures, Ali Hasan, candidate for Colorado House District 56, accepted a $1,000 contribution to his candidate committee from the "Nevada Cancer Centers," which appears to be a private corporation registered in Nevada.  Not only does the contribution exceed Colorado's voter-approved contribution limit of $200 for primary races and $200 for general elections, it appears to be from an unlawful source.  Under Colorado law it is unlawful for a corporation to make a contribution to a candidate committee.  According to the secretary of state's rules, Hasan has 30 days from the date of receipt to return the unlawful contribution. Hasan received the contribution on September 5, 2008.

Chantell Taylor, director of Colorado Ethics Watch, released the following statement in response:

"Ethics Watch calls on Mr. Hasan to immediately return the unlawful contribution from Nevada Cancer Centers.  The contribution patently exceeds the $400 contribution limit and was apparently made by an unlawful source – a corporation.  This contribution so obviously violates campaign finance law, it is astonishing that Mr. Hasan went so far as to deposit and report the contribution rather than instantly return it.  We call on Mr. Hasan to immediately correct the violation."
