Forum complaint
Tracking the news - Nov. 7
LAST WE KNEW: Colorado Ethics Watch on Oct. 23 filed complaints with the Secretary of State's Office naming Broomfield City and County Manager George Di Ciero, Assistant Manager Kevin Standbridge and three council members.
The complaints allege city staff and incumbent council members violated city and state laws when they received an e-mail from staff that might have assisted them in an Oct. 10 forum hosted by F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Unlimited.
The complaints contend city staff's answers constituted a contribution to a political campaign — prohibited under the Fair Campaign Practices Act — and incumbents didn't report receiving the benefit of staff time as an in-kind contribution on campaign finance reports. City officials said they did nothing wrong in providing the information and would have given it to any candidate who requested it.
LATEST: The Secretary of State's Office found the complaint had merit and last week forwarded it to an administrative law judge. Hearings were set for today and Thursday.
WHAT'S NEXT: Although hearings are set for this week, respondents can request to delay proceedings for up to 30 days. That had not happened as of the Enterprise's deadline Monday.
A judgment on the matter must be made within 15 days of the hearing's completion.
