Ethics complaint filed against Lakewood official

A government ethics watchdog group has filed a campaign-finance complaint against Lakewood City Council President Cheryl Wise after she criticized one council candidate and praised another at a city meeting.

Criticizing council candidate Charley Able and urging residents to vote for Karen Kellen using a city-funded medium Oct. 8 violated the Fair Campaign Practices Act, which prohibits using public funds to support a campaign, according to Ethics Watch.

The complaint was filed today with the Colorado secretary of state's office.

"Councilwoman Wise broke the law when she endorsed her favorite candidate for her City Council seat at an official City Council meeting," said Chantell Taylor of Ethics Watch.

Taylor said Wise should be sanctioned for the violation.

Wise could not immediately be reached for comment.
