"If there is a policy, there might need to be a better balance between protecting sensitive records and not inhibiting the rights of whislteblowers."

Group: Policy violates election-worker rights

A political watchdog group is calling Secretary of State Mike Coffman's new policy banning election workers from partisan activities unconstitutional.

Colorado Citizens for Ethics in Government said Monday that it is illegal for Coffman to prohibit state employees from making contributions to a political candidate.

The group cited a 1976 U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

But Coffman's office said the policy was vetted by the attorney general and is supported by U.S. Supreme Court rulings.
