Tribune confirms Weld public trustee spending concerns

Susie Velasquez, Weld County public trustee, used nearly $500 in public funds to pay for her annual membership fee in the Colorado Bar Association and to pay for legal education in the past year, even though she does not have to be an attorney to do her job, The Tribune confirmed.

The office’s expense reports since July 2011 confirm concerns first raised by the Denver Post last week that Velasquez, along with the 10 other public trustees who are appointed by the governor, were excessively spending taxpayer money. Two days after the story was published, nine of the trustees, including Velasquez, resigned, and one retired.
