Ethics Watch Responds to Tipton letter to House Ethics Committee
Today Colorado Ethics Watch learned that GOP Freshman Rep. Scott Tipton (R-Colo.), following a series of news reports, sent a letter to the House ethics committee yesterday letting them know that his daughter has been sending “improper” e-mails that introduce her as the congressman's daughter to solicit business for the tele-town hall services company she works for. The letter apparently apologizes for the actions of his daughter but claims that he hasn't violated any House Ethics Rules.
"While it is not clear whether Representative Tipton has violated any specific ethics rules, these actions put into question whether Rep. Tipton or his family are using his elected office for personal gain rather than to serve the interests of his constituency," said Luis Toro, director of Ethics Watch. "Ethics Watch will be taking a close look at this situation, focusing specifically on when Rep. Tipton was first aware that this was happening."
