DA Storey Announces Investigation of Historic Preservation Spending

June 23, 2008
In response to Ethics Watch's call for a criminal investigation of spending abuses by Black Hawk city officials, First Judicial District Attorney Scott Storey notified Ethics Watch that the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is looking at how Colorado gaming towns, including Black Hawk, are spending state historic preservation money. This investigation is ongoing and could result in criminal charges.

DENVER – Ethics Watch today called on Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey to initiate a criminal investigation of Colorado Secretary of State Mike Coffman and an employee in his office, Dan Kopelman. Through a Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) request, Ethics Watch has obtained new evidence suggesting that Secretary Coffman and Mr. Kopelman may be criminally liable for embezzlement of public property, or other unlawful acts.

Colorado Citizens for Ethics in Government (CCEG), a nonprofit legal watchdog group, sent a letter to Secretary of State Gigi Dennis urging her to investigate a series of questionable contributions to Rep. Bob Beauprez’s campaign for Governor. A CCEG analysis of Rep. Beauprez’s campaign finance reports showed that a number of LLCs with the same address and the same owners and/or operators have made contributions to his campaign in excess of individual contribution limits.
